Senior placekicker Dusty Mangum's 37-yard field goal as time expired gave the sixth-ranked Texas Longhorns a 38-37 comeback win over the No. 13 University of Michigan football team Saturday (Jan. 1) in the 91st Rose Bowl Game. Michigan sophomore placekicker Garrett Rivas (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit HS) had scored on a 42-yard field goal with 3:04 remaining to give the Wolverines (9-3) a 37-35 lead, but the Longhorns (11-1) used 10 plays to cover 47 yards on the game-winning drive.
U-M was led offensively by senior wide receiver Braylon Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS) with 10 receptions for 109 yards and three touchdowns. Edwards became Michigan's and the Big Ten Conference's career receiving TD leader, closing his career with 39 TD receptions to surpass the 37 scores attained by former Wolverine Anthony Carter (1979-82).Chad Henne (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson HS), the first-ever true freshman starting quarterback in a Rose Bowl game and just the second rookie starter in a Bowl Championship Series game, completed 18-of-34 passes for 227 yards and a school-record and Rose Bowl record-tying four touchdowns. He led seven offensive scoring drives for the Wolverines. Freshman tailback Mike Hart (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga Central HS) kept the offense balanced with strong running behind the Wolverines line. Hart rushed 21 times for 83 yards. Defensively, U-M sophomore defensive end LaMarr Woodley (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw HS), who led the team with 11 tackles (nine solo), was named the Rose Bowl's Defensive Player of the Game. Senior cornerback Marlin Jackson (Sharon, Pa./Sharon HS) set a career high with nine tackles against the Longhorns, including one tackle for loss and one pass breakup. Senior safety Ernest Shazor (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King HS) contributed seven tackles to finish the year as the team's leader tackler with 84 stops. Texas sophomore quarterback Vince Young rushed 21 times for 192 yards and four touchdowns and was named the Rose Bowl's Offensive Player of the Game, leading the Longhorns to the victory. Young rushed for four touchdowns and was 16-of-28 passing for 180 yards and a touchdown as he accounted for all five of the Texas touchdowns. U-M junior Steve Breaston (North Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills HS) returned the opening kickoff a season- and career-best 44 yards to Michigan's 47-yard line, providing the Wolverines excellent field possession to begin their 19th Rose Bowl appearance. Edwards caught two passes for 25 yards, including a 21-yarder to the Longhorns' 24-yard line, but the drive stalled as penalties pushed the Wolverines backwards to the 40-yard line. Hart added two carries for five yards and Edwards gained eight yards on a reverse. Texas quarterback Young scored the game's first touchdown on a 20-yard quarterback draw at 1:41 of the first quarter. Young kept the ball and ran untouched around the right side of the formation to provide Texas a 7-0 lead. The Longhorns' 12-play, 85-yard scoring drive consumed 4:12, with Young completing 3-of-5 passes for 41 yards in addition to the 20-yard TD run. Benson added five carries for 24 yards. Edwards evened the score at 7-7 with 12:08 left in the second quarter on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Henne along the left side of the Texas end zone. Edwards' receiving TD was the 37th of his career, tying the Big Ten and Michigan school record. The four-play scoring drive covered 50 yards in 1:39. Hart had runs of five, three and three yards to move the chains prior to the scoring play. The Longhorns answered the Wolverines touchdown and increased the lead to 14-7 with an 11-yard pass from Young to tight end David Thomas with 4:16 left in the second quarter. The 13-play scoring drive went 58 yards in 7:52. U-M took advantage of the game's first turnover and knotted the score at 14 apiece at halftime as Henne tossed an eight-yard TD pass to a wide-open Edwards in the right middle of the end zone. The eight-play scoring drive covered 34 yards with the Wolverines gaining two first downs. Edwards' touchdown grab broke the tie with Carter for the Michigan and Big Ten career marks and also set a new Rose Bowl career record for receptions (15). Edwards finished the game with 20 career Rose Bowl receptions. U-M received the turnover following a punt from senior Adam Finley (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) that was fumbled by Ramonce Taylor at the 31-yard line. Sophomore reserve safety Anton Campbell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West HS) recovered the ball, providing the Wolverines with excellent field possession at UT's 34-yard line with 2:26 left in the half. On the opening possession of the third quarter, the Longhorns capitalized and gained a 21-14 advantage as Young scampered 60 yards down the right sideline for the touchdown. UT's drive covered 72 yards in six plays and elapsed 2:07. The Longhorns converted a third-and-10 as Young tossed an 11-yard pass to tight end Bo Scaife. Michigan continued to play catch-up and scored 30 seconds following UT's touchdown as Breaston started and capped the drive with long plays. He caught the 50-yard TD pass from Henne on a third-and-10 play from midfield after returning the drive-opening kickoff 43 yards to 50. The Wolverines gained their first lead of the game at 6:29 of the third quarter, 28-21, as Henne completed a nine-yard TD pass to Edwards on a slant pass from the left side of the formation. U-M's balanced scoring drive moved 77 yards in 10 plays, with 40 yards coming through the air and 32 on the ground. Michigan picked up its first defensive turnover in three games and pushed its lead to 31-21 on a 44-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Garrett Rivas (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit HS). The Wolverines gained possession as sophomore linebacker Prescott Burgess (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding HS) picked off a Young pass across the middle and returned his first career interception 23 yards to Texas' 45-yard line. U-M gained one first down before the drive stalled at the Longhorns' 27-yard line. The six-play drive covered 18 yards in 2:10 and marked the final points of the third quarter. Young scored his third rushing TD of the game, a 10-yard run at 9:51 of the fourth quarter, and trimmed the deficit to 31-28. The Longhorns started with possession at midfield following a nine-yard punt return by Aaron Ross. UT's scoring drive covered 50 yards in eight plays and consumed 3:08. Young completed all three pass attempts for 33 yards on the drive, and Michigan was assessed a personal foul late hit penalty that gave Texas first-and-goal from the six-yard line. The Wolverines boosted their lead to 34-28 with 6:09 remaining in the fourth quarter as Rivas converted a 32-yard field goal. U-M answered the UT score, moving 60 yards in 11 plays. The Longhorns needed only 1:13 to answer the Wolverines, covering 69 yards in three plays. Young finished the drive with a 23-yard run to tie the score, and Mangum's extra kick was good for the lead, 35-34. Breaston began the Wolverines' next drive with a 53-yard kickoff return for a Michigan single-game bowl record, surpassing his previous season- and career-best set earlier in the game. It was his sixth kickoff return of the game for a total of 221 yards, setting Michigan and Rose Bowl records. Hart carried for 18 yards in the next three plays, ending on the 25-yard line, where Rivas completed the drive with a 42-yard field goal. This was his third of the game, tying the Rose Bowl record. With 3:04 remaining on the clock, Rivas' field goal gave him 13 points for the game, matching his career high. Mangum capped the Longhorns' 10-play winning drive with his 37-yard field goal as time expired.
